The Melanie Lee Easley ’01 Memorial
Scholarship Fund celebrates the memory of an exceptional alumna
and supports worthy Maryland students studying economics at Maryland
as Melanie did during her time at the university.
A car accident cut short the lives of Melanie and her husband Ryan Houston Easley; the university community’s response to this tragedy has been an outpouring of Maryland family support, from the Lee family, to the Asian American community, the Colonnade Society, the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences and the Department of Economics.
The Lee family—including Harry ’72, Karen ’75, Penny ’83 (pictured right, with Tom Fong ’83) and Kristi ’99—and friends have graciously given of their time and energy in support of the scholarship honoring Melanie.
Colonnade Society Council member
Tom Fong ’83 has rallied
Asian American alumni behind
this scholarship effort at
events such as the
Asian
American
Alumni
Dinner
in September
(see the
Event Gallery).
The College of Behavioral
and Social Sciences
and the Department of Economics
included the
Melanie Lee Easley Memorial
Scholarship
in a year end appeal
to all economics graduates urging them to take advantage of an anonymous donor’s challenge to match all gifts benefiting economics in the 2007 calendar year.
The Lee family and select donors to this memorial scholarship fund
will be on hand at the Maryland men’s basketball game on February
20, 2008 to raise the Terrapin spirit while honoring Melanie’s
spirit which lives on at Maryland. For more information about the
Melanie Lee Easley Memorial Scholarship Fund, contact Jennifer Dumas
at 301.405.1683 or jadumas@umd.edu.
Giving is contagious. And
when a donor’s company matches each and every dollar given
to Maryland, current and future Terps reap great rewards. Dan Rice
’91, Colonnade Society Council Co-Chair and Accenture Senior
Executive, rallies coworkers who are Maryland alumni to give back
to Alma Mater.
Rice encourages fellow Accenture Terps to
support the university and especially to leverage the available
corporate matching. Thanks to Accenture’s matching program,
Dan is joined by many colleagues in contributing at the Colonnade
level and higher each year. Terrapin spirit is a family affair,
according to Rice, whose wife, Dana J. Rice ’90, is also an
active contributor to the University of Maryland. Now, Rice is taking
his matching gift rallying cry on the road, persuading others who
work for matching gift companies to ask Terrapin coworkers to give
back to Alma Mater—the educational institution that gave their
careers a start—and get double with employer match.
A big Terp Thanks! to Dan and all
Maryland alumni employed by Accenture who make double the difference
by giving and by taking advantage of Accenture’s corporate
matching program. For tips on how to encourage your Maryland alumni
coworkers to contribute to the university’s success by giving—at
the Colonnade Society level or any level—contact Dan Rice
’91, pictured above. You can reach him at daniel.f.rice@accenture.com. |

the School
of
Public
Health
opened in the fall semester.
The school’s focus: the human behavior, social and environmental factors of many health problems affecting today’s Americans, including obesity, cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
The
school’s mission:
to advance a better state of health in Maryland, the nation and the world. Only miles from our nation’s capital, College Park is poised to serve as a hub of government and private health research and policy making.
Another function of the School of Public Health: to train the next generation of federal, state and local public health workers for the health and well-being of future Americans.

On September 18, the College of Chemical
and Life Sciences’ new Bioscience Research Building was
officially dedicated. Hundreds of supporters attended the Grand
Opening Ceremony of the $69 million state-of-the-art facility.
The building—providing researchers 68,000 square feet
of flexible laboratory space—was a focus of University President
Dan Mote even before arriving in Maryland in 1998 and will play
an integral role in ensuring the university and the state are
global leaders in bioscience research. Said Governor O’Malley
at the dedication: "The Bioscience Research Building affirms
Maryland’s commitment to bioscience and cutting-edge,
life-saving research." Find

“The Tradition Continues”
Women’s Basketball Pre-Game Reception
More than 600 Colonnade Society and Terrapin Club members, pictured

before they took on Georgia Tech on January 20, 2008 at the Comcast
Center. President Mote and other university leaders thanked Colonnade
Society members for their generous support of Maryland. Guests enjoyed
game fare, refreshments and plenty of Terrapin spirit before cheering
the Terps to victory over Georgia Tech 99-95. Click

An Afternoon
Tea
The Campus Club and the Colonnade Society hosted An Afternoon Tea on September 12, 2007 at the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center. Guests enjoyed a program that included remarks by the University of Maryland's First Lady, Patsy Mote, proud member of the Campus Club and advocate for student scholarships.
In addition to socializing with female Maryland peers, Campus Club
members shared their experiences of helping Maryland’s most
promising students—like Karina Reid, pictured right, with
her mom and Campus Club Board members—through the Campus Club
Scholarship Fund. After the inspiring program, guests were treated
to an array of teas and scrumptious desserts. Click
here to view photos from the event.
THANK YOU
On behalf of President Mote, all the deans and university leaders, THANK YOU for supporting Maryland.
It’s because of generous alumni and friends like you,
who lead the
Maryland family with your
charitable
giving,
that Maryland continues to stand head and shells above the rest! |
